Introduction to the Scale
Free online test for Anxiety Disorder Assessment - State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). STAI was developed by Spielberger in 1977 and revised in 1983.
It consists of two parts: state anxiety and trait anxiety, which evaluates people's usual emotional experiences. The scale has broad applicability based on norms. This test is primarily suitable for adults.
This scale can be used to assess anxiety in patients with internal medicine, surgical, psychosomatic, and mental disorders; it can also screen for anxiety-related issues among college students, military personnel, and other occupational groups; as well as evaluate the effects of psychotherapy and medication.
Consists of 40 descriptive items, divided into two subscales:
- State Anxiety Scale (S-AI), including items 1-20. State anxiety is typically a transient unpleasant emotional experience, mainly reflecting immediate or recent specific-time experiences of fear, tension, worry, and nervousness. It can evaluate anxiety levels under stress.
- Trait Anxiety Scale (T-AI), including items 21-40. Trait anxiety is a relatively stable anxiety tendency as a personality trait with individual differences, used to assess people's frequent emotional experiences.
Features of this scale:
- Can separately evaluate state and trait anxiety, superior to other anxiety scales.
- Self-assessment format with concise content, easy operation, and high user acceptance.
- Wide applicability.
